A Community Fridge Opened in Fellsmere, Florida!

SENFC is pleased to support Board Member Sue Flak in the creation and execution of Fellsmere Fridge, the first in Indian River County, of a new local pilot scheme to aid the food compromised called the Community Fridge Program. The  household-size refrigerator is placed within a community and is used to share food at the neighborhood level. The motto of the program is, “Take what you need, Leave what you can.” The purpose of the program is to reduce food waste, build stronger communities, encourage local artists and promote equal access to healthy food.

The Fellsmere Fridge will be maintained by a communal collective of partners from various communities, officials, businesses and individuals. The volunteer organizations include the City of Fellsmere, Indian River County, the Sunrise Rotary, the Haller/Loja family, Cutting Edge Signs, United Against Poverty, the Treasure Coast Food Bank, the Boys and Girls Club of Fellsmere, Indian River Charter High School Interact Club, Heather Kramer/Luz De La Hoz, Marsh Landing, Lowe’s of Vero Beach, Complete Electric and the first-grade students of Fellsmere Elementary.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of the Month:

March - #6 Clean Water and Sanitation

This month we are looking specifically at Goal 6 - Clean Water and SanitationEnsure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

"Let’s face it, gift-giving is tricky. One person’s treasure is another’s trash. But when it comes to meeting giveaways, the scale often tips toward trash, with too many tchotchkes littering attendees’ guest rooms when they head to the airport.

What’s a gift-buying planner to do? Use these rules thumb to reduce the carbon footprint of your giveaways..."
